Bowne House Reception and Award Ceremony 2012

October 17th 2012 Bowne House Reception and Award Ceremony

The Bowne House Historical Society held its third annual cocktail reception on October 17th at a private club in New York. The recipient of this year's Historic Preservation Award was Queens Borough President Helen M. Marshall.

Borough President Marshall is serving a third term as borough president; her prior experience includes service in the New York City Council, the State Assembly, and the local community board as well as teaching. She has been a strong supporter of New York's educational and cultural institutions for many years. Some of her projects include the Louis Armstrong Museum, a National Historic Landmark; the Lewis Latimer House, and of course the Bowne House. Borough President Marshall has allocated several million dollars in public funding for the restoration of the Bowne House and for construction of a new visitors center on the grounds.

Members, friends and trustees of the Bowne House Historical Society took part in the event, which was also attended by New York City Comptroller John Liu, who gave remarks; Councilman Peter Koo of Flushing, who spoke as well, staff from the offices the comptroller and of New York State Assemblywoman Grace Meng, and Queens Borough Hall representatives. We were also honored to have with us the recipient of last year's award, Dr. Barbaralee Diamonstein- Spielvogel and her husband, Ambassador Carl Spielvogel, Dr. James Muyskens, president of Queens College, and Mrs. Muyskens, as well as staff from the college, Borough President Marshall's alma mater.

We were pleased to have with us a number of Bowne descendants, including some who made the trip from out of town to be with us at our annual party. We had an enthusiastic group of guests who are eagerly looking forward to the upcoming restoration.

Borough President Marshall, in accepting the Award, stressed the importance of Bowne House, the oldest surviving structure in Queens, celebrated for its association with the principle of freedom of religion in America.

The Bowne House resident manager, Anne Perl de Pal, also addressed the group, outlining the various educational and community outreach projects underway at the museum; she was joined by Jack Pescatello, a physics teacher at Flushing High School who has been involved in some of our projects.
