Bowne House Celebrates Juneteenth

  • 37-01 Bowne Street Queens, New York United States (map)

This weekend, Bowne House celebrates Juneteenth. This national holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, the day the last remaining enslaved African-Americans in the Confederacy were emancipated. Through archival research and programs for visitors of all ages, Bowne House continues to honor the contributions of African-Americans to the history of Queens and Greater New York.

MAPPING THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD AT BOWNE HOUSE: FLUSHING AND BEYOND

In honor of Juneteenth, Bowne House is excited to share a preview of our digital StoryMaps project, which we are currently developing with the aid of a grant from the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, funded by The Association for the Study of African American Life and History. The project involves researching and mapping Underground Railroad routes in and around Queens, as well as sites relating to African-American history and abolition in Flushing.
