The book’s twelve essays about the history of architectural preservation in New York City have been written by noted authors including architecture critic and lecturer, Paul Goldberger; staff writer for the New Yorker, Adam Gopnik; New York Times’ architecture critic, Michael Kimmelman; and Andrew Dolkart, professor of Historic Preservation at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation.

In her essay, “ONE HOUSE, ONE FAMILY, THREE CENTURIES OF NEW YORK HISTORY,” Rosemary Vietor tells the story of patriarch John Bowne who emigrated from England and built a house in what is now Flushing, Queens c. 1661. Tracing the history of the family through multiple generations, Vietor - a descendant of the patriarch’s son Samuel Bowne – describes learning about her family’s history from her own grandmother in a Victorian house filled with family furniture, letters, and ephemera. A childhood fascination with her family’s past led to her present-day involvement with the preservation and protection of Bowne House.

Rosemary Vietor’s essay will be of interest to anyone who enjoys old houses. Bowne House descendants, as well as those who live in, write about, or are involved in the preservation of historic houses, will especially enjoy “ONE HOUSE, ONE FAMILY, THREE CENTURIES OF NEW YORK HISTORY,” as well as all of the essays in BEYOND ARCHITECTURE.

Bowne House is open year-round offering programs for students and visitors of all ages. The museum’s rare and extensive archival collection has just been digitized and is available on demand to the public at www.bownehouse.org/archives-online.
